What is Collegiate Shag?
Collegiate Shag is a partner dance that rose in popularity throughout the U.S. in the 1930s. The dance is known for its hopping basic step and high energy footwork that separates it from other forms of swing and other dances that use the shag name, such as Carolina Shag or St. Louis Shag.
I found this fun clip that shows a variety of great Collegiate Shag dance steps. We’ll try to get to a lot of these in class.
Be sure to check out this great clip from 1940 of LA dancers on the beach. You’ll see a variety of Collegiate Shag, Balboa, and Swing. The little guy in the white t-shirt is Conrad “Connie” Weidell. Originally from Minnesota, he is credited with bringing the dance we know today as Collegiate Shag to the West Coast.

Thanks to our very own Twin Cities Sweetheart, Juliette Lelchuk, this coming Rhythm Royale - Swing Dance w/ Live Music! we will have our own photobooth!
We're all hoping that we and our sweetheart, dance crush, bestie, etc. will look as good as Willa Mae Ricker and Leon James!
Either way we're looking forward to seeing you strut your stuff <3
Even though we dance to swing music every week, the scope of Black Music can be found throughout a huge array of genres in American history.
DJ Mel Varriano is going to take us all on a journey through a few of these tonight! We're going all the way from Rag Time to Jazz Rap, and enjoying the journey along the way!
Additionally, we'll have slides to help give us some context and history for each of the genres played! Can you name some of the genres/artists that you feel have influenced our music today?
The next Rhythm Royale - Swing Dance w/ Live Music! will be on Saturday, Feb. 16th. That means we'll be late for V DAY, but that doesn't mean we can't dance with our sweethearts!
Let's celebrate the first day of Black History month by highlighting one of the first Lindy Hoppers, Shorty George.
"Shorty" George Snowden is often credited with giving Lindy Hop its name. You can see him in this clip dancing an early form of Lindy Hop, the Break Away. Shorty George and his partner are the third couple. Check it out and share!
